Retail turnover up by over 2 percent in January

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that retail turnover was 2.2 percent higher in January 2025, year on year. Sales volume was up by 1.2 percent. Turnover in the non-food sector (including retail not in shops) increased by 1.9 percent, and turnover in the food sector (shops selling food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 2.6 percent. Meanwhile, online retail turnover grew by 3.6 percent, year on year.
The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in January, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in January would have been 2.5 percent higher than the previous year.

Turnover in non-food sector up by nearly 2 percent
Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 1.9 percent in January, year on year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 1.4 percent on January 2025.
Turnover in shops selling consumer electronics grew by 10.8 percent, year on year. Turnover among chemists and shops selling footwear and leather products grew by almost 9 percent and over 4 percent respectively, year on year. Shops selling home furnishings saw the same turnover as in January 2025. However, turnover among clothes shops, shops selling recreational goods and those selling DIY products (including kitchens and flooring) was down, year on year.
Turnover in food sector up by nearly 3 percent
Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was up by 2.6 percent in January, year on year. Sales volume was 0.8 percent higher. Turnover in supermarkets was up by 3.2 percent, while in specialty shops it was down by 0.9 percent.

Online turnover nearly 4 percent higher
Turnover among online retailers was up by 3.6 percent in January, year on year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 2.7 percent. Online turnover among multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) was up by 5.0 percent.
Online turnover for food and personal care products was up by 7 percent, year on year. Online turnover for other non-food products, consumer electronics and clothing and fashion items was also higher in January 2026.
