Changes in the housing stock

Since June 2025, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has published a new table ‘Lifecycle of residential and non-residential buildings: usage; region (86098)’. This replaces the old table entitled ‘Housing stock and non-residential stock; changes, usage, region (81955)’. This change means that there are small differences between the numbers shown in the old table and new table. With respect to the housing figures for 2024, for instance, this means that 181 more homes were recorded as completed than under the old method.

The new lifecycle table means that newbuild construction permits can now be retrieved from the Basic Register of Addresses and Buildings (BAG). Again, there is a methodological break between the data on permits previously collected through surveys, and the way in which they are now retrieved from the BAG. These differences are explained in more detail in this paper (only available in Dutch): Vergunningen voor nieuwbouwwoningen.
