Perpetrator of murder or manslaughter

The relationship between the perpetrator or presumed perpetrator and the victim is based on data derived from death certificates and/or court records. Partner homicide is referred to when a partner or ex-partner is named in the case. No distinction is made between married and unmarried victims.

Perpetrators other than the partner or ex-partner include: a parent, a relative, acquaintance, criminal, an unknown person or cases in which no perpetrator or suspect was found.

CBS has no data available on the perpetrators’ motivation for murder or manslaughter. It is therefore impossible to say whether it concerned intentional killing with a gender-related motivation (femicide).

An average of one to two female victims of partner homicide each year are not registered as residents of the Netherlands. In this news release, they are only included in the total, and not in the breakdowns.
