The gross yield for ware potatoes in 2025 are up by nearly 37 percent on 2024. Gross yields for seed onions are also 17 percent higher. For both crops, this is the highest yield seen in 25 years. This is according to figures from the provisional crop yield estimates published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

In 2025, the total area used to grow ware potatoes in the Netherlands is well over 83 thousand hectares, up by nearly 9 percent on 2024. The last time the total area used for ware potatoes exceeded 80 thousand hectares was in 2000. The gross yield per hectare (53.5 tonnes) is expected to be almost a quarter higher than last year. The total gross yield for ware potatoes is estimated at 4.4 million tonnes (+37 percent), the highest yield seen in 25 years.

Larger supply of seed onions due to higher gross yields per hectare

The volume of seed onions grown reached a record high in 2025, just as it did in 2024. The area used to grow seed onions was up by nearly 4 percent, year on year. The gross yield per hectare (52.1 tonnes) was 11 percent higher than last year. At 1.7 million tonnes (+17 percent), the total gross yield was unprecedentedly high. A larger cultivation area and many hours of sunshine also resulted in high yields for this crop. However, the quality may be lower due to common soil diseases, which may cause higher losses.

The increase in the area under seed onions resulted from a larger cultivation of red seed onions (+35 per cent). On the other hand, fewer yellow seed onions were cultivated, leading to a decrease in the crop area of nearly 2 percent. Due to higher yields per hectare, the gross yield for yellow seed onions actually increased to an estimated 1.4 million tonnes (+13 percent). Red seed onion yields are estimated at 290 thousand tonnes (+45 percent).

Wheat yields returned to their previous levels

Gross yields per hectare for wheat were at their lowest level in 2024. The wheat harvest was particularly poorly in that period due to low yields for winter wheat. This was due in part to prevailing wet weather conditions in autumn 2023, which hindered sowing. However, seeding and growing conditions were more favourable in 2025 and the area used to grow wheat cultivated have returned to the level of previous years. An estimated 1.1 million tonnes of wheat were harvested. That is nearly 70 percent more than in 2024 and 3 percent more than in 2023. Winter accounts for 92 percent of total wheat.

Provisional and definitive crop yield estimates

In June, CBS published figures on the cultivated area of arable crops. The estimated yields per hectare have now been added to these figures. These were estimated by experts on the basis of the latest information available. CBS calculates gross yields on the basis of the cultivated area and the expected crop yield per hectare. The final crop figures for 2025, based on a survey on arable farms, will be released in late January 2026.
