Feelings of anxiety or depression

Feelings of anxiety or depression are measured using ‘Mental Health Inventory 5’ (MHI-5). This is an international standard that specifically measures mental health and consists of five questions. The MHI-5 includes questions related to how the respondent has felt over the past four weeks.

The five questions are:
1. Have you felt very anxious?
2. Have you felt so unhappy that nothing could cheer you up?
3. Have you felt calm and relaxed?
4. Have you felt sad and down-hearted?
5. Have you felt happy?

For each question respondents can choose between six different options: all the time, most of the time, often, sometimes, seldom and never. A total score is calculated based on their answers. A respondent's minimum total score is 0 and the maximum total score is 100. Respondents scoring 76 or lower have had feelings of anxiety or depression in the past four weeks.
