Retail turnover up by 5 percent in July

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that retail turnover was 5.0 percent higher in July 2025 than in July 2024. Sales volume was up by 3.2 percent. Turnover in the non-food sector (including retail not in shops) increased by 4.9 percent, and turnover in the food sector (shops selling food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, online retail turnover increased by 6.2 percent year on year.

The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in July, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in July 2025 would have been almost 6 percent higher than one year previously.

Turnover in non-food sector up by almost 5 percent

Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 4.9 percent in July, year on year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 4.1 percent on July 2024.

Shops selling recreational goods, shops selling footwear and leather products, chemists, shops selling DIY products (including kitchens and flooring), shops selling home furnishings and clothes shops saw year-on-year turnover growth in July. Shops selling consumer electronics and white goods recorded a decrease in turnover, however.

Turnover in food sector up by over 5 percent

Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was up by 5.2 percent in July, year on year. Sales volume was 1.2 percent higher. Turnover in supermarkets was up by 6.3 percent, while turnover in specialty shops was down by 2.0 percent.

Online turnover over 6 percent higher

Turnover among online retailers was up by 6.2 percent in July, year on year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 9.8 percent. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) saw a 0.8 percent increase in their online sales.

Online turnover for food and personal care products, for consumer electronics and for other non-food products was higher in July 2025 than it was one year previously. However, online turnover for clothing and fashion items was lower.
