More bankruptcies in February

The number of corporate bankruptcies, adjusted for court session days, has increased. There were 49 more bankruptcies in February than in the previous month, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This is an increase of 21 percent. The number of bankruptcies remained below the pre-pandemic level.

Number of bankruptcies low

The number of corporate bankruptcies, adjusted for court session days, fluctuates significantly. Ups and downs alternate in rapid succession. The number of bankruptcies peaked in May 2013 (911); it subsequently declined continuously until August 2017 inclusive, after which it remained fairly stable until mid-2020. It then followed a downward trend again, reaching a record low in August 2021. After August 2022, the number of bankruptcies increased for four months in a row to the highest level since June 2020. In January 2023, the number fell. However, it increased again in February.

Most bankruptcies recorded in trade

If the number of court session days is not taken into account, in February a total of 259 businesses and institutions were declared bankrupt. The trade sector suffered most with 62 bankruptcies; this is an increase of 29 percent relative to January.

The trade sector is one of the sectors with the largest number of businesses. In February, relatively the highest number of bankruptcies was pronounced in the accommodation and food services sector.
