Retail turnover over 4 percent up in October

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports for October 2022 that the Dutch retail sector recorded 4.2 percent year-on-year turnover growth. The volume of sales, however, went down by 5.2 percent. Turnover in the food sector was up by 7.8 percent and in the non-food sector up by 1.7 percent. Furthermore, online retail turnover increased by 4.2 percent.

Retail turnover data have been adjusted for the shopping-day pattern in October. Retail sales tend to vary from one day to the next. If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in October 2022 was 2.9 percent higher than in the same month last year.

Turnover in non-food sector almost 2 percent higher

In October, turnover in the non-food sector was up by 1.7 percent year on year. The volume of sales (adjusted for price changes) fell by 6.7 percent compared to the same month last year.

Shops selling personal care products, shops selling DIY products, kitchens and flooring, shops selling recreational goods and clothes shops saw turnover growth. However shops selling consumer electronics and white goods, shops selling footwear and leather products and those selling furniture and home furnishings had lower turnover than twelve months previously.

Turnover of food shops almost 8 percent up

Shops selling food, beverages and tobacco achieved 7.8 percent higher turnover in October 2022 than in the same month last year. The volume of sales, however, was 3.2 percent lower. Turnover at supermarkets was up by 8.8 percent, turnover at specialist shops by 0.7 percent.

Online turnover 4.2 percent higher

In October, online turnover was up by 4.2 percent year on year. Web shops recorded a turnover increase of 1.6 percent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) achieved 7.5 percent higher turnover in online sales.

Online turnover of food and personal care products, consumer electronics and clothing and fashion items was higher in October compared to October 2021. Online turnover of other non-food products was lower.
