House prices over 8 percent higher in December

In December 2020, prices of owner-occupied dwellings (excluding new constructions) were on average 8.3 percent higher than in the same month one year previously. In 2019, the price increase slowed down, but in 2020 it accelerated again. This is evident from price monitoring of existing owner-occupied dwellings by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and The Netherlands’ Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency.

Along with December figures, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) is able to indicate the annual figures. In 2020, owner-occupied dwellings increased in price by 7.8 percent on average relative to the previous year.

House prices show upward trend

House prices reached a low in June 2013. The trend has been upward since then and the index reached a new record high in November 2020. Compared to the low in June 2013, house prices in December were up by almost 54 percent on average.

More housing transactions in December

According to The Netherlands’ Cadastre, the total number of transactions recorded over the month of December stood at 26,208. This is over 16 percent higher than one year previously. In 2020, a total of 235,511 dwellings were sold. This represents an increase of almost 8 percent relative to 2019.
