Every week, there are approximately 750 deaths recorded among the residents of nursing and care homes. Over 600 of these deaths are among those aged 80 and over. The mortality rate is higher in institutional households (70 per 10,000 people) compared to private households (17 per 10,000 people). This is for evident reasons: nursing and care home residents are in the last stage of life, often suffer ill health and are extremely vulnerable.
