A status holder is granted exemption from the integration requirement if he or she has a psychological or physical limitation or a mental disability. Exemption is also possible if the person integrating has demonstrated sufficient effort was made to fulfil the integration obligation. Exemption is also granted if someone obtains a Dutch education diploma from university, higher professional education (hbo), secondary vocational education (mbo, level 2 and up), pre-university education (vwo), senior general secondary education (havo), intermediate general secondary education (mavo) or prevocational secondary education (vmbo).
