Countries in Central and Eastern Europe (also referred to as CEE countries) are the countries which have joined the European Union (EU) since 2004, i.e. Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (joined the EU on 1 May 2004), Romania and Bulgaria (joined the EU on 1 January 2007) and Croatia (EU member since 1 July 2013). The figures presented in this publication refer to people with a foreign background belonging to the first generation, registered in the database of a Dutch municipality and born in one of the CEE countries mentioned above.
