The Netherlands: transit port for Japanese products to Europe

According to a recent study by Statistics Netherlands, goods imports from Japan amounted to 8.4 billion euros in 2013. Three-quarters of these goods were almost immediately re-exported again. The Netherlands is mainly a transit country for Japanese products to Europe.
Japan is the world’s third largest economy.  Its foreign trade amounted to a total of 1.8 trillion dollars in 2013. The Netherlands accounts for only a small share of this. Japan exported 9.3 billion euros worth of goods and services to the Netherlands in 2013, and imported Dutch goods and services amounting to 4.5 billion euros. This puts the Netherlands in twelfth place on its list of export partners, but no higher than thirtieth in terms of imports.

Goods imports from Japan amounted to 8.4 billion euros in 2013. The Netherlands is Japan’s twelfth most important export partner, and - after Germany - the second in Europe. The United States and China top the list. The Netherlands is mainly a transit country for Japanese products to Europe. Three-quarters of the imported goods were re-exported again almost immediately. The Netherlands imports mainly office machines, telecommunication equipment (including parts) and excavating equipment from Japan. In 1996 the value of imports from Japan was still only 4.9 billion euros. Japan is the ninth largest partner for goods imports to the Netherlands.

Exports: pharmaceuticals and tobacco products

The Netherlands exported 3.2 billion euros worth of goods to Japan in 2013. These consisted mainly of pharmaceutical and tobacco products. The value of goods exported to Japan has risen by 1.5 billion euros since 1996. In spite of this increase, Japan is not a large export market for the Netherlands. In 2013, it was the twenty-third largest partner for goods exports.

More services exported than imported

The Netherlands exported 1.4 billion euros worth of services to Japan in 2013. Imports of services from Japan amounted to 0.9 billion euros.
