Constituent republics of the Soviet Union

In the early 1990s, the Soviet Union was split up into 15 independent states: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Belarus and the Russian Federation. The Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the EU on 1 May 2004.
