Data are based on the survey Social coherence and Welfare. One of the questions was whether persons would define themselves as belonging to a religious denomination or philosophical creed. Respondents could choose from various categories: Roman Catholic, Calvinist, Dutch reformed, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew and ‘other denomination’.
The attendance rate of religious services is based upon the question how often respondents attend religious services: every week, 2 to 3 times a month, once a month, less than once a month and ‘hardly ever’. Respondents who have indicated not to belong to a religious denomination or philosophical creed are included in the category ‘hardly ever’.
The figures presented in this article for the year 1999 are the average over the period 1997-1999, those for the year 2008 are the average over the period 2004-2008.
