Trade union federation

A trade union federation is an umbrella organisation representing the trade unions which have joined the federation and all the trade union members. Trade unions are engaged in wage negotiations with employers and employers’ organisations and provide support to individual members. The trade union federation represents the joined trade unions during negotiations with the central government and employers’ organisations and participates in advisory councils like the Social and Economic Council in the Netherlands.

Three trade union federations are active in the Netherlands:

  • Dutch Trade Union Federation (FNV)
  • Christian National Trade Union Federation (CNV)
  • Trade Union Federation for Mid-level and Senior Staff (MHP)
