The sector Health care and welfare in the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) 2008 published by Statistics Netherlands. The SIC classifies businesses and institutions on the basis of their main activity. Care refers to services provided by hospitals, dentists, physiotherapists, homes for the elderly, welfare institutions and childcare centres. Not included are branches whose main activity is supplying goods, e.g. the sale of medicines by pharmacies or supermarkets. Management activities provided by health care insurance companies and the Ministry of Public Health and Sports are also excluded.
