In 2009, municipalities and provinces sold their Nuon shares to the Swedish energy company Vattenfall and their Essent shares to the German energy provider RWE. Municipalities sold their Nuon and Essent shares for a total amount of 5.7 billion euro: 3.3 billion for the Nuon shares and 2.4 billion for the Essent shares. The payment is done in phases. The first part was paid in July 2009 by Nuon and in September 2009 by Essent. Altogether, 216 municipalities received nearly 3.2 billion euro in their bank accounts.
