Pension funds have active and non-active participants. Active participants pay contribution into the fund. Non-active participant do not contribute, but are entitled to pension benefits. They are pensioners or relatives of deceased pensioners, but also former participants, who do not pay their contribution because they are on leave or have recently switched to another pension fund. Such former participants are referred to as ‘sleepers’.
