Tracks in preparatory secondary vocational education

Four tracks are distinguished in vmbo:

  • Basic vocational track. The successor of the lowest levels in preparatory vocational education (vbo) and prepares for the basic vocational training, level 2 of the qualification structure of secondary vocational education (mbo).
  • Middle management track. The successor of the highest levels in vbo and the minimal level of education which gives access to the vocational training track and middle management training track, respectively levels 3 and 4 of the qualification structure of mbo.
  • Combined track. An intermediate track between the theoretical track and the vocational track which has the same level as the theoretical track but also provides vocational training. The combined track gives access to the middle management training of the qualification structure of mbo.
  • Theoretical track. The successor of the mavo gives access to the middle management training, level 4 of the qualification structure of mbo. After successful completion, it is possible to move up to the fourth year of havo.

The combined track and the theoretical track can be regarded as the successors of the mavo. The basic track and the vmbo-k track are regarded as the successors of the vbo.
