Animal housing order (Besluit huisvesting)

This government order sets maximum limits to the amount of ammonia that may be emitted from
sheds, stables and barns in which farm livestock are kept. For most of these buildings, the maximum amounts will be effective from 1 January 2010. Smaller farms will receive a reprieve to 1 January 2013. Large farms with systems housing more than 750 sows, more than 2 thousand porkers or more than 40 thousand poultry have been required to comply with the strictest emission norms since 30 October 2007.

By using certain housing systems, pig and poultry farmers may reduce emissions by more than is required. In compensation they may emit more in other housing systems.
