Care financed under the exceptional medical expenses act (AWBZ)

Statistics Netherlands has new figures on people aged 18 years or older who receive care under the exceptional medical expenses act (AWBZ), and who pay a contribution towards this care.

There are two types of care:

  1. Care in the own home.
This consists of personal care, home help and/or nursing.
  2. Care in an institution.
This is care provided to people staying in an institution such as a care or nursing home.

The data are taken from the central registration of care costs and the municipal population registers.

From 1 January 2007 household care is no longer covered by the exceptional medical expenses act, but by the social support act (WMO).
