Two groups of mushrooms are distinguished in relation to plants. Saprophytic mushrooms decompose dead organic material like tree trunks, branches and leaves. The decomposition products serve as food for plants. Mycorrhizal mushrooms live in a mutually dependent relation with host trees and fungi. Fungi withdraw water and minerals from the soil and transport them to the trees which return sugars to the fungi.
