Poorer in nutrients

In the early 1970s, the Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management started to remove the mown vegetation and as a result the soil became poorer in nutrients. Prior to the 1970s, roadside verges used to be mown five to six times a year and the mown vegetation was not removed leading to less diversity of species.
