More immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania

On 1 January 2007, Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union (EU). Since then, the number of Bulgarians and Romanians who came to settle in the Netherlands has increased considerably. In the first four months of this year, 2.8 thousand immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania were entered into the population registers of Dutch municipalities, more than twice as many as in the entire year 2006. A similar effect was observed in May 2004, when Poland joined the EU.

Sixty percent of immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania are women. More than half of immigrants from these two countries settled in the four largest Dutch cities.
