Apart from the standard treatment process in sewage treatment works, additional measures can be applied to remove nitrogen and phosphate. These measures realise an extra reduction of the amount of nitrogen and phosphate discharged to surface water. Biological and chemical methods can be applied to remove phosphate. Nitrogen can only be removed by using biological technology.
