The figures refer to all non-financial enterprises (i.e. excl. banks and insurance companies) in as far as they are legal persons, i.e. public limited companies, private limited companies, and cooperatives. This definition comprises 215 thousand enterprises in the Netherlands in 2005. The figures for the largest company groups *some 1,800) are taken from Statistics Netherlands figures, the annual accounts of smaller companies are supplied by the Ministry of Finance on the basis of declarations in aid of corporate tax.
