Increase turnover construction sector in third quarter

In the third quarter of 2006, construction realised a turnover increase of 5 percent, relative to the same period one year previously. Turnover in the construction sector grew for the sixth quarter in a row.

Civil engineering accounted for 12 percent of the increase in turnover in the third quarter of 2006. Construction turnover grew by almost 7 percent in the first three quarters of 2006.

Turnover increase in residential and non-residential building 

In the third quarter, turnover in residential and non-residential building grew by nearly 4 percent. Other construction companies increased their turnover by more than 3 percent.

In the first 9 months of this year, turnover in residential and non-residential building rose by 7 percent compared to the same period last year. Prices of newly built dwellings went up by almost 2 percent in the same period.

Most construction firms one-man businesses

The 10 percent of construction companies in the Netherlands employing at least 10 persons generate approximately 80 percent of total turnover in the sector.

More than 90 percent of all building firms in the Netherlands are small-sized businesses, employing fewer than 10 persons. Nearly 60 percent are one-man businesses.
