Table explanation

This table contains figures on the European harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) for the Netherlands. The HICP measures changes in the prices of goods and services purchased by consumers on Dutch territory for their own consumption. The HICP is calculated on the basis of internationally agreed definitions and methods and allows for the comparison of price changes between various European countries. The table provides information about indices, monthly rates of change, annual rates of change and weighting coefficients.

In addition to figures on total expenditure, figures on detailed product groups (expenditure categories) are also published. The table shows how much consumers in the Netherlands spend on each product group, on average, providing a picture of its share of total expenditure. This is also referred to as the weighting coefficient. The total weighting of the HICP is 100,000.

The table also shows the HICP at constant tax rates. This is the HICP that excludes the effect of changes in the rates of product-related taxes (e.g., VAT or excise taxes). As such, the price index approximates what the price change would be if tax rates had remained the same.

HICP figures are published every month. After the end of each calendar year, annual figures are also released. The index figure for a given calendar year is calculated as the average of the indices for the twelve months in that year.

Data available from: January 1996.

Status of the figures:
Provisional figures for each reporting month are published in a flash estimate. The flash estimate includes figures for the total HICP and in a number of main groups (special aggregates). These figures are based on source data that is not yet complete and they are provisional.

The figures used for the second publication for the same reporting month are final in most of the cases. Any differences between the provisional and final figures are due to additional source data that has become available after the flash estimate was published. HICP results are only defined as provisional if - at the moment of the second publication - it is known that the data is not yet complete or will be updated in the next month. In this case, the figures will become final one month later.

Changes compared to the previous version include:
Data for a new period has been added and/or adjustments have been made.

When will new figures be published?
The flash estimate is published on the last working day of the month to which the figures relate, or shortly thereafter.

The final figures are usually published between the first and second Thursday of the month following the reporting month.

All CPI and HICP publication dates are shown in the publication calendar (see paragraph 3).
