Consumer prices; CPI 2025=100, index and rates of change

This table contains figures on the Netherlands’ consumer price index (CPI). The CPI measures changes in the prices of goods and services purchased by households in the Netherlands for their own consumption. The table provides information about indices, monthly rates of change, annual rates of change and weighting coefficients. The annual rate of change of the CPI all items is known as the inflation.

In addition to figures on total expenditure, figures on detailed product groups (expenditure categories) are also published. The table shows how much households in the Netherlands spend on each product group, on average, providing a picture of its share of total expenditure. This is also referred to as the weighting coefficient. The total weighting of the CPI is 100,000.

The table also shows the derived CPI. This is the CPI that excludes the effect of changes in the rates of product-related taxes (e.g., VAT or excise taxes). As such, the price index approximates what the price change would be if tax rates had remained the same.

CPI figures are published every month. After the end of each calendar year, annual figures are also released. The index figure for a given calendar year is calculated as the average of the indices for the twelve months in that year.

Status of the figures:
Provisional figures for each reporting month are published in a flash estimate. The flash estimate includes monthly and annual rates of change in the total CPI and in a number of main groups (special aggregates). These figures are based on source data that is not yet complete and cannot be used for indexation purposes. Therefore, no indices are published in the flash estimate. The figures used for the flash estimate are provisional.

The flash estimate is followed by the first publication of indices and the rates of change across all expenditure categories. These figures are also provisional. The final figures for the same reporting month are published one month later. Any differences between the provisional and final figures are due to additional source data.

Data for a new period has been added and/or adjustments have been made.

When will new figures be published?
The flash estimate is published on the last working day of the month to which the figures relate, or shortly thereafter.

The new indices are usually published between the first and second Thursday of the month following the reporting month.
