Table explanation

This table shows the indigenious production, total final consumption and import and export of different kinds of solid biomass commodities. The classification of solid biomass is based on the breakdown of biomass requested by Eurostat, which results from the European Regulation 2018/1999 and coordination with national users.

Data available:
From 2015 onwards.

Status of the figures:
Figures 2015-2023 are definite. The 2024 figures are revised provisional.

Changes as of November 2025:
Figures for 2023 and 2024 have been updated. Due to improved insights on the biomassa usage in the forest-based industry co-products have been revised, this results in little adjustment from 2015 onwards.

Changes as of November 2024:
Figures for 2022 are adjusted and figures for 2023 have been added.

Changes as of June 2024:
None, this table is new.

When will new figures be published?
Revised provisional figures for the previous year are published every year in November.

Description topics

Indigenous production
The capture or extraction of fuels or energy from natural energy flows, the biosphere and natural reserves of fossil fuels within the national territory in a form suitable for use. With biodiesel, biogasoline and biogas, the production of these fuels counts as indigenous production, the biogenic raw materials used for this are not yet considered as energy. Making waste suitable as an energy commodity, for example by burning it in waste incineration plants, also counts as extraction.
Imports
Imports of energy commodities.
Exports
Exports of energy commodities.
Total final consumption
The amount of energy used by companies, households and transport in the Netherlands. Energy can be used
- for transformation into other energy commodities, this is input minus the energy produced.
- as final consumption.

Total energy consumption =
Total net energy transformation + total own use + distribution losses + total final consumption.
