Table explanation
This table provides data on lifestyle of the population of the Caribbean Netherlands aged 15 years and older in private households. It comprises the following aspects of lifestyle:
- Smoking
- Use of alcohol
- Length, weight, people who are underweight and overweight
- Use of contraceptive pill
These aspects are shown for the Caribbean Netherlands, and also for the islands of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba separately. Also breakdowns by sex, age and level of education are presented.
The research is a sample survey. This means that the figures shown are estimates for which reliability margins apply. These margins are also included in the table.
The Omnibus survey was carried out for the first time on Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius in 2013 during the month of June and the first week of July. For the second time the Omnibus survey was carried out on Bonaire during the months of October and November 2017, and on Saba and St. Eustatius in the period January to March 2018. In 2021, the survey was conducted from October to December.
Data available from: 2013
Status of the data:
The figures for the most recent period are provisional.
Changes as of January 24th 2025
The figures on height, weight, underweight and overweight over 2021 have been added.
Experts from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment and experts from the Departments of Public Health on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba have checked these figures and have concluded that these figures are plausible.
When will new data be published?
New data will be published every four years.
Description topics
- Length and weight
- Reported length
- Reported length in centimetres without shoes.
- Reported weight
- Reported weight in kilograms, without clothes. Women who are pregnant are asked to report their weight prior to pregnancy.
- Under- and overweight
- Under- and overweight is measured with the so-called Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is the quotient of the body weight in kilograms and the square of the length in meters [kg/m2]. For persons aged 20 years or older, the BMI is used to calculate the following weight indicators:
- Underweight: BMI < 18,5
- Normal weight: BMI >= 18,5 en < 25,0
- Overweight: BMI >= 25,0
- Moderate overweight: BMI >= 25,0 en < 30,0
- Severe overweight: BMI >= 30,0
For persons younger than 20 years of age, different limit values apply. These values depend on sex and age. Respondents whose length and/or weight is unknown or who reported an improbable weight in relation to their length are not used for calculating the indicators. This applies to persons aged 20 years or older with a BMI lower than 14 or higher than 45, and persons younger than 20 years of age with a BMI below 10 of above 45 for the figures of 2013. From 2017 onwards, the upper limit of the BMI has been changed from 45 to 50 for persons of all ages.- Underweight
- Percentage of persons whose BMI is lower than 18,5 kg/m2.
For persons below age 20, different limits are used to establish underweight. For persons under 18, these limits correspond with a BMI below 17 kg/m2 in adults. For persons aged 18 and 19 years old, the BMI below which a person is considered underweight is obtained by linear interpolation between those values for individuals aged 17 and 20 years old.
- Normal weight
- Percentage of persons whose BMI value is between 18,5 and 25,0 kg/m2.
For persons below age 20, different lower and upper limits are used to establish normal weight. For persons under 18, these limits correspond with a BMI between 17 and 25 kg/m2 in adults. For persons aged 18 and 19 years old, the minimum BMI for which a person is said to have normal weight is obtained by linear interpolation of the values for individuals aged 17 and 20 years old.
- Overweight
- Percentage of persons whose BMI is 25,0 kg/m2 or more.
For persons below age 18, different limits apply. These limits correspond with a BMI value of 25,0 kg/m2 in adults.
