Description topics

Generic health indicator, 12+ years
The generic health indicator consists of a summary measure (norm score) for physical health and a summary measure (norm score) for mental health. These norm scores are calculated for persons aged 12 years or older.
Figures refer to the so-called 'Short Format 12' (SF-12). This is a frequently used international standard which was developed in the United States by Ware et al. (1995).
Separate items of the health indicator
Percentages for the separate questions of the health indicator.
Limited in daily activities
Percentage of persons answering ‘severely’ or ‘slightly’ to the question:
‘Does your health limit you in doing daily activities such as moving a table, vacuuming or cycling?’ The three possible answers are: ‘severely’, ‘slightly’, ‘not at all’.
Physical health: limited work/activities
Percentage of persons answering ‘yes’ to the question:
‘In terms of your work or other daily activities, have you been limited in the kind of work or activities because of your physical health in the past 4 weeks?’ Possible answers are: 'yes' and 'no'.
Functional limitations
Functional limitations (physical) are observed by means of 3 groups of questions:
a. The OECD indicator for persons in the age category 12 years or older
b. The ADL (Activities of Daily Living) indicator for persons in the age category 55 or older.
c. Temporary activity limitations and bed-days for persons of all ages.
Activity limitation, bed-days, 4+ years
Questions:
‘Have you had to change your daily routine in the last 2 weeks because of illness or injury?’ If so: ‘How many days in this period?
‘Did you have to stay in bed during this period?’ If so: ‘For how many days?’
The figures refer to persons in the age category 4 years or older.
Activity limitation per 14 days
Percentage of persons aged 4 years or older who answered 'yes' to the question: ‘Have you had to change your daily routine in the last 2 weeks because of illness or injury?’

Activity limitation, days per year
Average number of days per year on which activities were limited.
Question: ‘On how many days in the last 2 weeks was your activity reduced by illness or injury?’ Multiplication of the reported number of days by 26 provides annual figures.
The figures refer to persons in the age category 4 years or older.
Bed-days per 14 days
Percentage of persons aged 4 years or older who answered 'yes' to the question: ‘Have you had to change your daily routine in the last 2 weeks because of illness or injury?’ and 'yes' to the question: ‘Were there any days in this period that you stayed in bed for the whole day or for most of the day?’
Bed-days per year
Average number of bed-days per year.
Question: ‘How many days in the last 2 weeks did you stay in bed for the whole day or most of the day because of illness or injury?’ Multiplication of the reported number of days by 26 provides annual figures.
The figures refer to persons in the age category 4 years or older.
-----
These are bed-days as a result of a temporary activity limitation because of illness or injury. Bed-days of bedridden persons are not included.
