Housing accommodation stock on 1 January
The stockfigures are itemized by dwellings, dwelling units,
recreation houses and special residential buildings.
Capacity special residential buildings
Total capacity in special residential buildings on 1 January.
A special residential building is a building intended for permanent habitation by institutional households. Five criteria have to be met:
1 - the building has one fixed address;
2 - the building is intended for permanent habitation;
3 - the building is used by one legal person
4 - the legal person is included in one of the following sectors:
- penitentiaries
- monasteries, etc.
- boarding schools
- health and social welfare (psychiatric hospitals, homes for the elderly,
nursing homes, etc.)
5 - the building is used by the legal person for the permanent lodging
and care of a number of persons.

From 1992, data on the number of places available in special residential
buildings have been based on the administrative housing survey with
reference date 1 January 1992 and subsequently on changes reported to
Statistics Netherlands by the municipalities.

The statistical information on the dwelling stock is based on census/
housing survey of 28 February 1971 and an intermediate survey
conducted among municipalities at the end of 1975 and subsequently on changes stock reported to Statistics Netherlands by the municipalities.
From 1992, data on the dwelling stock have been based on the
administrative housing survey with reference date 1 January 1992 and
subsequently on changes reported to Statistics Netherlands by the
municipalities.

of rooms, type of dwelling, ownership and client.

Dwelling units
Changes due to adding dwelling units to and withdrawing dwelling units
from the stock.
A dwelling unit is defined as part of a building intended for permanent habitation by a private household and meeting all the criteria which apply to a dwelling with the exception of criterium 4: the unit needs to have a toilet and a kitchen fit for the preparation of complete meals. Shared toilet and kitchen facilities are required instead.
