Description topics

Production and capacity utilisation

The development of production in the previous month compared with the
month before (realisation) and the anticipated development of production
in the subsequent three months. Seasonal effects are taken into account
by the respondents. Other indicators closely related to production are
utilisation, the (technical) production capacity and obstacles to
production. The answers are weighted according to the company's turnover
value.

Capacity utilisation: Capacity utilisation in % of the available production capacity in the last
month of the quarter. Major repairs may result in a reduction of capacity
utilisation. Overtime and shift work may result in a capacity utilisation
of more than 100%.

Obstacles to production

Every last month in a quarter manufacturers indicate whether there are
bottlenecks in production, e.g. insufficient demand, insufficient
capacity, labour shortage.

Obstacles because of insufficient demand

Obstacles (techn.cap.and/or materials): Too few machines or installations to be able to meet demand and
or lack of materials.
Until the end of 2002 excluding lack of materials.

Competitive position

Figures available from March 1994.
Response percentages to the quarterly question: "Has the competitive '
position of the enterprise improved, remained the same or declined in
the last three months? The respondents are invited to make a distinction
between the domestic market, the foreign market inside the EU and the
foreign market outside the EU. Response is weighted by the domestic and
the (total) foreign sales value of the enterprise.

Competitive position balance: The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting that the competitive
position on the Dutch market has improved in a particular quarter minus
the percentage reporting that the position has declined. This balance
reflects the development of the Dutch competitive position in a
particular quarter compared with the previous quarter.

Balances per indicator

This option allows a prompt selection of the balance per indicator without
having to choose between other results (large, small, increase and
decrease), incorporated in the balance. The balance is the difference
between the response percentages increased/large/improved and
decreased/small/declined.

Competitive position

Dutch market: The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting the competitive
position on the domestic market has improved in a particular quarter minus
the percentage reporting the position has declined. This balance
reflects the development of the domestic competitive position in a
particular quarter compared with the previous quarter.
