How many residents of the Netherlands were born abroad?
The remaining 15 million inhabitants were born in the Netherlands. Among them are 2.1 million people who are children of migrants. They have one or two parents who were born abroad. Of these, just over half (more than 1.1 million) have one parent born abroad and one born in the Netherlands, while just under half (968 thousand) have two parents born abroad. In total, 11.7 percent of the population was born in the Netherlands to one or both parents born abroad.

Where in the country do people with a non-Dutch background live?
People with a non-Dutch background live mainly in the Randstad conurbation in the west of the country, or in south Limburg. In 2024, The Hague and Amsterdam had the highest percentage of residents with a non-Dutch background. Residents of Urk and Achtkarspelen are the least likely to have roots outside the Netherlands. The spatial distribution of the group as a whole is very similar among both first-generation migrants and people whose parents migrated to the Netherlands (the second generation).

The classification of the population by origin involves two variables: ‘born in the Netherlands’ and ‘country of origin’. The country of origin is classified by world region, but countries from which many immigrants have come to the Netherlands are also identified individually.
- Born in the Netherlands: The ‘born in the Netherlands’ variable concerns whether a resident was born in the Netherlands or elsewhere, but also where their parents were born.
- Country of origin: As well as ‘born in the Netherlands’, residents of the Netherlands are also classified by country of origin. For people born outside the Netherlands, the country of origin is simply the country in which they were born. For people born in the Netherlands, the country of origin is their mother's country of birth; if their mother was born in the Netherlands, it is their father’s country of birth.
