Energy from renewable sources

Energy generated from renewable sources (i.e. sources that are constantly being replenished). This includes wind power, hydropower, solar power, geothermal energy and aerothermal energy, as well as biomass. Fossil energy and nuclear energy do not qualify as energy generated from renewable sources, because they are derived from finite natural resources.

This news article concerns primary energy consumption. National and European policy targets for energy generated from renewable sources are based on the concept of ‘gross final consumption’. The share of energy from renewable sources under this definition differs from the share based on primary energy consumption. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) uses the definition based on ‘gross final consumption’ in order to avoid confusion.
