Gross final energy consumption

In accordance with European agreements, the share of renewable energy sources is calculated on the basis of gross energy consumption for energetic use. This is the energy consumption by end-user sectors (industry, households, services, agriculture and transport). The use of energy carriers as raw materials – such as crude oil for the production of plastic – and the losses incurred during energy conversion have not been taken into account.

The calculation is performed in accordance with the rules set out in the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). These rules are slightly different from the rules for the national energy balance. As a result, energy consumption by end-users in the renewable energy statistic is not exactly equal to energy consumption by end-users in the national energy balance.

See the publications: ‘The impact of RED III on renewable energy calculations’ and the ‘RVO CBS Renewable Energy Monitoring Protocol’ for calculating the figures in this news item.
