Dissertation on the causes of nonresponse and how these insights can be used to use the budget for fieldwork efficiently.
This dissertation discusses the following questions: Why should we be concerned about nonresponse? Which individuals are less likely to participate in survey research? How can response rates be increased? How can nonresponse be studied? Does a higher response rate lead to more accurate outcomes? How can biases due to nonresponse best be combated?

This study sought to contribute to an understanding of the causes of nonresponse with the goal of using the fieldwork budget in such a way that survey results reflect the situation of the population as accurately as possible, with as little bias due to nonresponse as possible. Recording the response process and gathering information about nonrespondents can contribute more to the quality of surveys than a dogged hunt for the last respondent.
