Employed persons survey
What does the study entail?
Purpose
The purpose of the survey of employed persons (WNE) is to provide information on the work characteristics (such as contract of employment and occupation), employment conditions, education and skills of employed persons in the healthcare and well-being sector. The survey of employed persons (WNE) is conducted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and commissioned by the ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) for the Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) research programme.
Target population
Employed persons aged 16 years or older working in the healthcare and well-being sector. This sector is delineated based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SBI).
Statistical unit
Employed persons.
Date/year survey started
Although the survey of employed persons has been carried out since 2009, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) conducted the survey of employed persons (WNE) for the first time in Q2 2019.
Frequency
The survey of employed persons (WNE) is conducted twice per year.
Publication strategy
Definitive figures.
How is the survey conducted?
Survey type
Sample survey.
Data collection method
The survey of employed persons (WNE) is a rotating panel survey. Each respondent is asked to take part in a maximum of four surveys every two years. The survey is conducted online. In the first survey, respondents are asked whether they are willing to participate in the follow-up surveys and whether they prefer to be contacted by post or by e-mail. The follow-up surveys are also conducted online.
Respondents
Employed persons.
Scope of sample survey
The sample size for the first survey was 47 thousand employed persons. The sample size for the follow-up surveys was approximately 35 thousand employed persons.
Checking and correction methods
The sample survey is checked for plausibility, internal consistency and completeness on a yearly basis. Overrepresentation and underrepresentation of certain groups in the response is corrected through weighting.
Weighting
The survey of employed persons (WNE) has been drawn with unequal probabilities, which leads to differences in response rates. This means the composition of the sample survey differs from the composition of the population. These differences are resolved using a method of weighting known as post stratification. When the weighting factors are determined through post stratification, the uneven probability of inclusion caused by the sampling method are taken into account and bias caused by non-response is reduced. The following model is used for the weighting: [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sub-sector] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Age] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Gender x Age (rough estimation)] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Migration background] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Household income] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Type of household x Location of household] + [Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Region x Urbanicity (rough estimation)] + [ Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) sector x Urbanicity].
Quality of the results
Accuracy
As the survey is based on a sample, the results of the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (WNE) are subject to random fluctuations. The results are not shown in StatLine tables if the number of respondents for a given target population is less than 300, as the margins are considered to be too wide.
Sequential comparability
Since 2019, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has been responsible for collecting the data for the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (WNE). This means that the results for the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (WNE) of 2019 and previous editions are difficult to compare, or not comparable at all.
Quality strategy
All data is checked for plausibility, internal consistency and completeness.
