Critical raw materials

This CBS study on the criticality of critical raw materials from a Dutch perspective is methodologically based on previous work by the US Geological Survey, the European Commission and Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), among others. The figures presented in this news release regarding economic importance result from research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Both these figures and international sources have been used to quantify supply risks. The figures on the expected growth in demand are based solely on international sources. See the link below to find out more about the data and methods used for this study.

The findings of this CBS study align with the Dutch Critical Raw Materials List (NKG) published by the Netherlands Materials Observatory (NMO) in July 2026. All eight materials highlighted in this news article are included in the NKG list of 17. However, the CBS study adds granularity by ranking the materials relative to one another and by incorporating underlying data on expected growth in demand.
