European Pact on Migration and Asylum

The European Pact on Migration and Asylum came into force on 12 June 2026, since when new asylum rules have applied in the EU. The Netherlands is fulfilling the requirements of the pact through new legislation: the Asylum and Migration Pact Enforcement and Implementation Act. The aim of the pact is to manage migration flows in an orderly manner, strengthen the EU’s external borders, and ensure a fairer distribution of asylum seekers among EU member states. In order to achieve this, the IND has overhauled the asylum procedure so that applicants receive a decision more quickly.
