The figures are based on information from the Personal Records Database (BRP). That includes, in addition to the genders male and female, the category ‘gender unknown’. This category includes people with a non-specific sex (at birth or upon arrival from another country), and also includes non-binary individuals for whom a non-binary gender designation has been made possible through the courts.
This group ‘gender unknown’ is too small (fewer than 600 people in the entire population) to disaggregate because reliable statistics cannot be produced when so few data points have been collected. For a complete picture of the population of the Netherlands, 'gender unknown' has been included in the category of ‘women’.
