Gross final energy consumption

In accordance with European agreements, the share of renewable energy sources is calculated on the basis of gross final energy consumption. This refers to energy consumption by end-user sectors (manufacturing, households, services, agriculture and transport). The use of fuels as raw materials — such as petroleum for the production of plastic — and losses during energy conversion are not included in the calculation.

The rules for calculation are derived from the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). These rules differ slightly from the rules for the national energy balance. As a result, energy consumption by end-users in the renewable energy statistic is not exactly the same as energy consumption by end-users in the national energy balance.
