This refers to the marital status of the victim at the time of death. The victim's marital status is not necessarily related to the relationship between the victim and the the perpetrator or presumed perpetrator. For example, a victim may have become a widow and then entered into a relationship with the perpetrator or presumed perpetrator which was not officially registered.
