For this news release, figures on kilometres driven were supplemented with personal and household characteristics to learn more about drivers. Statistics Netherlands only has personal characteristics for private owners, so the kilometres by background characteristics only relate to kilometres driven by natural persons. No background characteristics could be linked for a portion of vehicle owners (0.8 percent). However, for some vehicle owners, no background characteristics could be linked (0.8 per cent). This group is therefore not included in the figures.
Because it is impossible to know who is actually behind the wheel of a car, it has been assumed that the registered owner of the vehicle (as registered with the RDW) is also the driver. The characteristics of that person have been analysed. In practice this means that someone else may have driven the car, for instance another member of the household.
The income groups in the article are based on standardised disposable household income. The total number of kilometres for 2024 were linked to income data for 2023 (the most recent figures available).
