Immigration (from 1999)

The reasons for migrating are only known for non-EU/EFTA migrants who arrived in the Netherlands after 1998. The number of resident migrants therefore only includes those who arrived between 1999 and 2025. People who arrived before that have been excluded from the figures.

For EU/EFTA migrants, the reasons for migrating are deduced from those who arrived in the Netherlands after 1998. Because the reasons for migrating are based on the activities that migrants engage in once they are in the Netherlands, there is no data yet for the most recent reporting year (2024). The number of resident migrants therefore only includes those who arrived between 1999 and 2023. EU/EFTA immigration only includes persons who did not hold Dutch citizenship when they arrived in the Netherlands.
