Peope who move house

A person who moves house in the Netherlands is a person whose position in the household was independent both before and after moving. The independent position in the household before and after moving consists of one of the following types:

  • a single-person household
  • two people living together as a couple (cohabitation) with or without children (living at home)
  • one parent in a single-parent household
  • reference person in other type of household

For example, if a couple separates and one partner moves out to live on their own, the person who has moved out is classified as single instead of a partner in a couple. This person is the one who relocated. A person who moves house is also a person who relocates in the Netherlands and whose position in the household was dependent both before and after moving. This position in the household both before and after moving consists of one of the following types:

  • a child living at home
  • another member of the household
  • a person living in an institutional household

For example, when a family relocates in the Netherlands, both the parents and the children relocate.

Household that is relocating

All persons in the household are relocating. Households consisting of both people who enter the housing market and those who already owned or rented a home before moving to a new home are also classified as a household that is relocating. When a family relocates, both the parent(s) and the children are classified as people who move house because they are all part of the same household.
