A man who is married to or in a registered partnership with the child's mother is generally considered the child's legal father. In other cases, the man can acknowledge his parenthood of the child and become the legal father of the child. In this news release, data on the date on which the family law relationship first commenced was used to determine who the legal parents of the child were at the time of birth. Acknowledgement of parenthood does not make the father a legal representative of the child. For this, he must first apply for parental authority. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has no figures on this.
