International definition of health care expenditure

The international definition of health care spending focuses on medical and nursing care. This means that spending on long-term care is only partially covered by this definition. Support such as home assistance or social care - provided under the Social Support Act (WMO) and the Long-Term Care Act (WLZ) - is not included. The majority of care provided under the Child and Youth Act is not included because this is partly educational or social in nature. District nursing services financed under the Health Insurance Act (ZVW) is included in full. More explanation and the consequences of a recent revision are provided in the publication Revision of statistics on spending on health care and social care, 2021-2023.
